Jim Sarra, deputy director of athletics at NCAA Division I University of Texas at San Antonio, has been hired to run the athletics program at the University of Illinois Springfield.
UIS announced Sarra as its new director of athletics Wednesday pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for July 20-21 in Urbana.
Sarra, 48, is a first-time athletic director.
“It is surreal right now,” he said. “It has not sunk in yet. It’s exciting. I’m very confident in my abilities and I would not have taken this opportunity if I didn’t feel like we could be successful there. There’s a really good team in place from the chancellor on down through the athletics program.”
The story was reported by The State Journal-Register on June 22, 2016.
