LGBTQIA+ program rebranded to expand inclusion

The University of Illinois Springfield Office of Gender and Sexuality Student Services rebranded its LGBTQIA+ training program to encourage supportive students, faculty and staff on campus to take even more actionable steps towards inclusion.

In 2001, Safe Zone training began. This semester, the initiative was rebranded Brave Space training.

“For the past 25 years, Safe Zone-type programs on college campuses have always been about supportive allies hanging a sign to show they were safe to come out to as a sexual or gender minority, while encouraging conversation with others that have questions about LGBTQIA+ people,” said Kerry Poynter, director of the UIS Office of Gender and Sexuality Student Services. “The name change reflects the UIS Safe Zone Committee’s desire for members to take brave steps to engage in difficult conversations that affirm LGBTQIA+ people.”

LGBTQA Resource Center at UIS renamed

The LGBTQA Resource Office at the University of Illinois Springfield officially changed its name Monday.

The change coming on the 10th anniversary of the office opening.

Staff with the newly named Gender and Sexuality Student Services know many of their students are still growing and maturing when they arrive and they hope their services will help students succeed both mentally and academically.

"We teach the campus the difference between biological sex and gender, and sexual orientation and gender expressions, in order to keep the campus more inclusive and understanding, and essentially the name really reflects what we're doing," said Kerry Poynter, director of the UIS Gender and Sexuality services.

UIS Professor Looks To Show Solidarity With Minority Groups

In the wake of the election, a new fashion statement is taking shape across the country as a way to show solidarity for the most vulnerable groups.

University of Illinois at Springfield Professor Heather Dell is passing out these safety pins for people to wear. She wants to give students and faculty a visual, so that people who are a minority have an idea who's there stand with them.

Dell is a member of the LBGTQ community herself. The professor said she has concern for people who might feel unsafe whether they're part of the LBGTQ, Muslim, or African American community.
“I think we need to build the community quickly, viably and lovingly and hang on to it. So, I think it's a great way to do it and I don't think scare tactics should stop us,” said Dell. Dell said she's happy to see the amount of faculty and students who've decided to wear these safety pins already.

According to a Huffington Post article, this movement started back during the Britain exit from the European Union. The movement over there was to show willingness to protect people being abused, which is similar to what Dell is doing here.

LGBT Legacy Wall on display at UIS

A portable display that lists the achievements and stories of 125 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people throughout history is returning to Springfield for the first few weeks of October.

The Legacy Wall will be on display at the University of Illinois Springfield Public Affairs Center Concourse through Oct. 15.

It was set up over the weekend, and is designed to share the often-hidden LGBT lives that are a part of history.

Through the Legacy Wall, he hopes to educate the public and inspire young people. “One of the missions of the wall is to first and foremost inspire kids who still grow up without the benefit of learning about LGBT role models in history,” Victor Salvo said.

The Legacy Wall includes photographs and biographies of 125 well-known LGBT people in the fields of politics, art, religion, sports and social activism.

An opening celebration for the exhibit will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the UIS Public Affairs Center. The celebration also kicks off a month of LGBT activities at UIS.
