UIS' Supak makes history with trip to Division II golf nationals

Finals week is grueling but the University of Illinois Springfield’s Talon Supak didn’t need to go far for a pick-me-up.

The junior golfer only needed to glance at his desk. On display is the medalist trophy he won at the NCAA Division II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Allendale, Michigan, May 4.

“I have it on the centerpiece of my desk,” he said. “I look at it all the time.”

Supak has won tournaments before but none as big as the super regional. He was No. 1 in a field of 100 and beat Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Zach James by a single stroke for medalist honors.

The victory earned Supak a spot in the 108-player field at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships Tuesday through Saturday at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, Colorado.

“It’s real exciting to get to go,” Supak said. “I knew going into the super regional I had to get top five at least to try to make it in. I really didn’t expect to win. That gives me a lot of confidence coming in now.”
